Ukraine to tighten control over dietary supplements and food additives: what will change

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Law No. 4122-IX, which establishes stricter control over the circulation of biologically active additives (BADs) and food additives. The new regulations are aimed at strengthening consumer protection from unscrupulous products and misleading information about the composition and properties of these products.

According to the press service of the Verkhovna Rada, the document introduces a clear definition of dietary supplements. They are interpreted as food products consumed in small doses to supplement the diet. They may include vitamins, minerals and other substances with nutritional or physiological effects.

The law also gives the Ministry of Health the right to establish a list of permitted vitamins and minerals, as well as determine their maximum permissible doses for use in dietary supplements. This will allow controlling the composition of products and preventing possible negative consequences for the health of consumers.

In addition, the document provides for increased liability of manufacturers for the production and sale of supplements that do not meet legal requirements. From now on, dietary supplements can be sold exclusively in packaged form - in capsules, pills, lozenges, sachets, ampoules with liquids or other similar formats.

Another important change is that the law prohibits the registration of medicines under the guise of dietary supplements. This decision is aimed at combating unscrupulous manufacturers who disguise medicines as supplements, which can pose a serious threat to the health of citizens.

The adoption of this law is an important step towards regulating the food supplement market in Ukraine. The new rules will help strengthen control over product quality, protect consumers from counterfeiting, and promote greater transparency in the field of dietary nutrition.
