  • Health benefits of sea air

Every year, scientists are paying more and more attention to the impact of the environment on our health. One such factor that has long been associated with improved health is sea air. And if before you could only hear about it in classic literature, now research confirms that this is really not a myth, but a scientifically substantiated fact. Studies by British scientists have shown that living by the sea promotes better health and well-being.

One of the main findings of British scientists is the fact that people who live closer to the sea feel better overall. This is not only true for those who live in secluded homes on the coast, but also for residents of large seaside cities such as Newcastle and Southampton. These cities have much healthier residents than their land-based counterparts such as London or Birmingham. Studies have shown that the urban landscape is unlikely to have the same positive impact on health as the seaside.

However, researcher Ben Wheeler, from the University of Exeter, raises some doubts about exactly how much the salty sea air affects people's health. He suggests that of far greater importance is the sight of the sea itself, and its calming effect on the psyche. Plus, the seascape encourages people to spend more time outdoors, walking along beaches, which in turn promotes health.

Interestingly, the study included surveys of people from different regions of the UK who rated their health. It turned out that among people living within 5 kilometers of the sea, 69% consider their condition to be good, while among those who are more than 50 kilometers from the coast, this figure is much lower. This suggests that proximity to the sea does have an impact on well-being.

In addition, other studies also support the hypothesis that being in a natural environment reduces stress levels and promotes better health. Last year, scientists from the United States concluded that living in nature has far fewer negative effects on the body than living in cities with their noise and pollution.

So, sea air, walks on the beaches and even just a view of the ocean can have a beneficial effect on human health. This is not only psychological comfort, but also physical recovery. In the conditions of modern life, when stress and problems with the ecosystem in big cities are more and more common, it may be worth thinking about changing your environment at least for a while and spending more time near nature.
