Chewing gum manufacturers spare no expense on advertising, drawing attention to their products. Some options are presented as ideal helpers after a meal, others - as a way to freshen breath and increase confidence in communication. Trays with chewing gum in stores are always in a visible place, pushing for an impulsive purchase. However, behind the bright packaging lies something that can do more harm than good.
Chewing gum is based on chemical components: sugar substitutes, flavorings, flavor enhancers. Among them you can find aspartame, sorbitol, acesulfame and other substances. At first glance, their content seems safe if you chew gum in moderation. However, given that these additives are also present in other products that end up on our table every day, the risk of accumulating harmful doses increases.
It is often claimed that chewing gum helps cleanse the mouth after eating, but this is a misconception. A glass of water or a cup of tea will do the job much better. Chewing gum will not remove food debris between the teeth - there are dental floss and brushes for that. Moreover, regular use of natural products such as apples not only cleans teeth, but also brings vitamins to the body.
The social aspect is also important. Chewing gum in the presence of other people can be perceived as a sign of disrespect. A person chewing gum often looks absent-minded and uninterested in communication. Such an image creates a negative impression rather than adds confidence.
What is included in the composition of chewing gum? The base is latex, which is considered safe. But other components raise questions. For example, dyes such as E-171 or E-131 can have a carcinogenic effect. Sweeteners such as aspartame, when heated, release substances that can cause a toxic effect on the body. Even seemingly harmless additives like sorbitol or xylitol can cause a laxative effect if taken in excess.
Chewing gum is sometimes used as a way to combat stress or smoking, but this does not justify its daily use. It does not provide significant benefits, and the potential harm to health makes this product undesirable in the diet. If you care about your health, it is better to give up chewing gum in favor of safer alternatives.
