The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted an amendment that keeps the subsistence minimum for the calculation of prosecutors' salaries at UAH 1,600 in 2025, which, in fact, cancels the planned 37% increase in their salaries. Such a decision caused a significant outcry among deputies and the public, as it directly affects the level of remuneration of representatives of law enforcement agencies.
Roksolana Pidlasa, head of the budget committee of the Verkhovna Rada, announced the adoption of the amendment, stressing that maintaining an unchanged living wage makes any increase in prosecutors' salaries impossible. Instead of the expected 37% pay rise, they will continue to receive pay based on the current level of pay.
Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak, who also supported this initiative, noted that amendment No. 155, which excludes raising the salaries of prosecutors, was supported by 242 people's deputies. This testifies to the significant support of the decision among the parliamentarians, which is due to the need to maintain the stability of the budget for 2025.
According to Zheleznyak, this decision was made possible, in particular, thanks to the active position of the head of the committee, Roksolana Pidlasoi, who openly spoke out against the increase in salaries for prosecutors during the committee's meeting. "She opposed the increase both on the podium and in the committee. Thank you for such a position," Zheleznyak noted, emphasizing the importance of public support for this initiative.
The question of the remuneration of prosecutors appears against the background of the general discourse on the effectiveness of budget allocation in the sphere of public finances. Many experts emphasize the importance of optimal distribution of funds, given the difficult economic situation in the country. Despite the need to increase the funding of the law enforcement system, today's decision emphasizes the priority of a frugal approach to public spending.
Canceling the increase in salaries for prosecutors, as the vote showed, is part of a broader strategy to preserve the country's economic stability, even if it means limiting the incomes of certain categories of civil servants.
