Technology giant Google has been forced to pay more than $1 million in compensation to Ulk Rowe, head of Google Cloud, for gender discrimination. This was reported by Bloomberg.
According to the publication, Ulku Rowe was a victim of discrimination in the company because of her gender, and she was treated unfairly in relation to other employees.
For the first time, Ulku Rowe filed a lawsuit against Google in 2018, claiming that the company systematically paid men higher salaries, even if women had more experience and qualifications.
The court ruled that Google was obliged to pay Ulk Rowe compensation in the amount of $150 thousand "for pain and suffering" and $1 million in punitive damages.
During the trial, Google tried to prove that Ulku Rowe, who is the Director of Development at Google Cloud, had the same opportunities and was subject to the same performance criteria as her male colleagues, in other words, she was not discriminated against. However, Ulku Rowe claimed otherwise.
In the lawsuit, she accused Google of discriminating against her by offering her a lower-ranking position and paying her less than men who did the same job.
Despite the fact that Ulku Rowe had 23 years of experience in finance and technology, Google placed her at the eighth level, while her male colleagues who were hired during the same period were placed at the ninth level.
At the eighth level, Ulku Rowe earned about $750,000 annually, while some employees at the ninth level received more than $1 million a year, indicating a clear pay gap between men and women doing similar work.
This case serves as an example of the importance of combating gender discrimination and stimulates discussion of pay equity and gender equality in the workplace.
