EU agrees on 16th package of sanctions against Russia: what is known

Ambassadors of the European Union member states have agreed on the 16th package of sanctions against Russia in response to its armed aggression against Ukraine. This decision was made on February 19 at a meeting of the EU Permanent Representatives Committee.

This was reported by Radio Liberty European correspondent Rikard Jozwiak. According to him, the official approval of the sanctions package is expected on February 24, when the EU Council of Ministers for Foreign Affairs will meet in Brussels.

Details of the content of the new package of restrictive measures are not yet disclosed. However, analysts predict that it may include new restrictions on the Russian military-industrial complex (MIC), the financial sector and technology exports.

Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak called the EU decision an important step in the fight against Russian aggression. He stressed that sanctions are one of the key tools for deterring Russia and preventing further war crimes.

"The news about the 16th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation is a positive signal. It is important that part of the Ukrainian proposals have been taken into account. However, we must now work on the 17th package, in particular on strengthening sanctions against the Russian military-industrial complex and control over its weapons," Yermak stressed.

The European Union continues to pressure Moscow, trying to limit its military capabilities and economic resources. Further sanctions could hit Russia's energy sector, banking sector and export operations, which will further complicate its ability to finance the war.
