Support and reconstruction: Results of payments to victims of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant explosion

Over the past year, the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine announced an important step in compensating those affected by the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, which had serious consequences for nature and people.

According to the report, in 2023, more than 23 thousand residents of Kherson and Mykolaiv regions received financial assistance in the amount of UAH 5,000 per person. The total amount of these payments amounted to more than UAH 115 million, which was paid from the state budget.

In addition to national efforts, international organizations also contributed to compensating the victims. Financial assistance from international partners amounted to UAH 88 million, which was allocated to residents of the affected regions.

The destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station dam caused a serious environmental crisis, flooding 620 square kilometers of land. The resulting environmental and social impacts include changes in the river's morphology, environmental pollution, and loss of natural reserves.

According to the Kyiv School of Economics KSE, the affected settlements, such as Korsunka, Kozachi Lageri, Raiske and Nova Kakhovka, have been hit hard, damaging at least 19,000 homes. The provision of financial support was an important step towards the recovery and reintegration of these communities.
