The construction of two more underground schools has been completed in Kharkiv, which are due to open their doors to students on April 22, immediately after the Easter celebration. This was announced by the city's mayor, Igor Terekhov, emphasizing the importance of developing a safe educational space in conditions of military threat.
The new educational institutions are located underground, which allows providing students with the maximum level of protection during an air raid. In addition to basic classes for schoolchildren, preparatory classes for older preschool children will also be held in these schools on weekends, which will help to more effectively integrate children into the educational process in the future.
According to official data, more than 60 thousand school-age children currently live in Kharkiv, so the need for safe learning conditions remains extremely relevant. Underground schools are becoming not only a response to modern challenges, but also an innovative step in the development of the city's educational infrastructure.
In parallel with the opening of schools, design work is underway in Kharkiv to create the first underground kindergarten in Ukraine — and possibly in the world. According to Igor Terekhov, this is an extremely complex and technically demanding project. The institution is expected to provide conditions for children to fully spend the whole day, including rest and sleep.
The mayor emphasized that there are currently no analogues of such an institution in the world, and its construction will require significantly more resources than underground schools. Despite this, the city authorities plan to implement the project exclusively at the expense of funds from the city budget, without attracting additional sources of financing.
"I hope that this year we will complete the development of the project, and only after that we will determine the final estimated cost," — concluded Igor Terekhov. Kharkiv continues to demonstrate an example of resilience and innovative thinking in wartime, creating unique models of education that can later become a reference point for other regions.
