It's no secret that apples are considered a healthy fruit, but a new study has revealed an unexpected aspect of their effects on dental health. It turns out that apples may be more harmful to enamel than many other foods, including carbonated beverages. According to experts, apples may increase the risk of tooth decay four times more than sugary drinks, raising questions about the need for changes in consumption habits.
Professor David Bartlett, head of orthopaedic dentistry at the Dental Institute at King's College London, explains that eating an apple slowly can significantly increase acid levels in saliva, which negatively affects tooth enamel. This makes apples potentially dangerous to dental health, especially if consumed frequently without extra precautions.
The study, which involved more than 1,000 people aged 18-30, found that regular apple consumption increases the risk of damage to dentin - the inside of the tooth - by three and a half times. Particular attention was paid to how frequent apple consumption affects enamel and dentin, and the results were alarming for those who are used to snacking on apples throughout the day.
One risk factor is that apples contain a significant amount of sugar - up to four teaspoons in one fruit. This provokes an increase in acidity levels in the mouth, which in turn contributes to the destruction of tooth enamel. Therefore, experts recommend consuming apples with the addition of products that neutralize acid, such as cheese. The calcium found in cheese can help reduce acidity levels and protect your teeth.
It is also recommended that you drink water after eating apples or brush your teeth before eating. This will help minimize the negative effects of acids on enamel and prevent enamel damage. Simply drinking or using a toothbrush after eating will help restore balance and reduce the harmful effects on your teeth.
So, despite all the benefits of apples, it's important to be mindful of the potential risks to your teeth and take steps to avoid damaging them. Eating the right combination of foods and taking care of your teeth can help keep them healthy for years to come.
